Nero d'Avola Santa Cecilia by Planeta is undoubtedly one of the best wines produced with this variety in Siciliy. There are no accurate historical information about this red grape variety, one of the most representative in the region. Ancient records show that the Nero d'Avola makes its first appearance in the history of wine of Sicily with a very designation different from nowadays: Calabrese is the name by which it was indicated throughout the nineteenth century. The name Calabrese is nothing but an italianized version of the Sicilian dialect word "calavrisi", or "grape of Avola", a small town of Syracuse, from which the grape then spread. A long process of research of the best place to make a great wine with this grape variety has led Planeta to Noto, in the extreme south of Sicily, right near Avola. The name of the base cru speaks for itself: it is called Buonivini ("Goodwines" in English) and provides one of the richest compositions of limestone in the whole region. From the preciousness of this terroir and from a meticulous work in the winery takes origin Santa Cecilia, a wine that shows a strong expression of elegance, power, balance and exaltation of the unique fragrances of Sicily.
